NSE sets deadline for VAT refund

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has given stockbrokers up till Friday, January 30, 2015 to submit documented evidence of refund of Value Added Tax (VAT) that were deducted between October 1 and 24, 2014 to investors.

It should be recalled that the Federal Government had commenced the implementation of the exemption of commissions on stock market transactions from Value Added Tax (VAT) as from October 1, 2014. However, the announcement was delayed until late October.

The exemption, which was first announced as part of measures to resuscitate the market in December 2012, was part of a basket of incentives outlined by Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. She had on December 3, 2012, announced the exemption of stock market transactions from VAT and stamp duty. However, the implementation had dragged over the years. The stamp duty waiver, which was also announced in 2012, is yet to be implemented.

The exemptions from VAT included commissions earned on traded values of shares, and those that are payable to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS). The exemption is effective for a period of five years according to the Federal Government gazette on the issue.

A circular obtained yesterday by The Nation indicated that the Exchange would commence the verification of the full refund of the VAT that were deducted within the delayed period between the announcement of the removal of VAT on Stock Exchange transactions and the release of the gazette.

Stockbrokers had continued the deduction of VAT on transactions before the release of the gazette.

Meanwhile, FBN Capital, the investment banking arm of FBN Holdings Plc, has predicted that the Nigerian equity market may close flat this year with average year-on-year gain of 1.0 per cent.

Analysts’ report from FBN Capital noted that while the downtrend at the stock market has created attractive buy opportunities, investors might wait on the sideline as the macroeconomic outlook remained overshadowed by the decline in crude oil price.

“The fall of the index in Lagos has produced buying opportunities in both banks and non-financials although we do not see a clear recovery until investors feel that the oil price has reached its floor. FBN Capital sees a 1.0 per cent gain for the index over the full year,” FBN Capital stated.

The report noted that the rationale for investment remains firm household spending and the prospect of a renewed reform momentum once the electoral cycle has ended.

FG Fires Back, Says Soludo’s Tenure a Disaster

The Federal Government has described the five year Prof Chukuwma Soludo used as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria as a failure and a disaster to the banking sector.

Soludo who on monday wrote an article saying that Goodluck Jonathan has performed woefully as the president of Nigeria.

But the Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala while reacting through a statement issued by her Special Adviser Communications, Mr Paul Nwabuikwu said Soludo through his article has committed what she described as “intellectual harakiri.”

The Minister noted that not only was the article littered with abusive and unbecoming language, it shows Soludo, whom she described as an “embittered loser in the Nigerian political space” can get so derailed by misquoting economic facts and maliciously turning statistics on their head to justify a hatchet job.”

Military deploys drones to battle Boko Haram

Come drones and other sophisticated equipment have been deployed in the Northeast to curtail Boko Haram’s insurgency, The Nation learnt yesterday.

It was also learnt that the military intensified air strikes on Boko Haram bases in Monguno to reclaim the town, which fell to the sect’s fighters last weekend.

The acquisition of the drones is part of the new massive military campaign to be launched soon against Boko Haram.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said most of the equipment were sourced from the Far East, including Russia and Ukraine, following lack of cooperation by some Western countries.

The source said the arrival of the hardware has boosted the morale of troops.

The source said: “The military has deployed some drones and sophisticated hardware in the North-East in line with its timeline to end Boko Haram insurgency.

“These drones will complement ongoing air and land strikes against some bases of the sect.

“The simultaneous attacks on Monguno, Konduga and Maiduguri by Boko Haram insurgents were pre-emptive steps against the military by the sect.

“With effective equipment, the insurgents were aware that the game is up and in annoyance, they decided to attack military installations and troops.”

The military has intensified air strikes on the insurgents’ locations in Monguno.

Another source said: “Troops will soon reclaim Monguno because the insurgents in the town have been trapped. They cannot move away from the town since troops have laid siege to all entry and exit points.

“You see, the insurgents also struck in Monguno, Konduga and Maiduguri to divert attention of the military from the relocation of some of their commanders from one of their strategic camps to another.”

Fleeing residents yesterday disclosed that the insurgents are in full control of the town.

Abdullahi Jibril, who fled to Maiduguri through Gajiganna told our correspondent that there was no military presence in Monguno.

Jibril said residents of Gajiganna, a town on the Baga/ Monguno road, were also on the run for fear of an impending attack by the insurgents.

“As I am talking to you now, there is no single soldier in Monguno. Anybody that is saying that there are soldiers fighting in Monguno is lying. The Boko Haram have put their flag in the hospital, police station and the military barracks. They are preaching in the place right now.

“I was lucky to escape after I moved my father and my mother to Gajiganna. They killed the Imam Bachila of Bakasi area. They also caught the chief Imam of Monguno town, Liman Modu who is the most respected in the town,” Abdullahi Jibril informed.

Hundreds of soldiers from Monguno are stranded and loitering on the streets of Maiduguri after the Sunday attack on the military formation in the area.

The soldiers were denied access to Maimalari Barracks and some of them were rather camped at AIT on Damboa Road.

Our correspondent who was on Baga Road saw many stranded soldiers among other hundred displaced civilians from Monguno, Baga and Gajiganna sitting under tree, with nowhere to go.

Some of the soldiers had their guns on their shoulders, their shuttle bags on their back.

Some of the soldiers who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed anger with the Federal Government for, according to him, not doing enough for them in the fight against Boko Haram.

“I can’t imagine that a Federal Government will abandon her soldiers to die in a fight that cannot take one hour to finish with serious commitment. We fight in the bush with Boko Haram and no one sends us any jet but when one man is coming for campaign, you see many Alpha Jets with helicopter gunships patrolling, flying in the air. Is this fair?” a soldier said.

One said: “Can you imagine that as soldiers, we came into Maiduguri and the army authorities turned us down from entering the barracks. Where is the esprit de corps that we preach among us?”

Troops launch battle to retake Monguno

Following continued ground battle  and air strikes, troops killed 53 more Boko Haram insurgents on Monday in Konduga and Maiduguri parts of Borno State.
The figure came from the battle between troops and the insurgents from Sunday night till the early hours of Monday.
A security source, who spoke in confidence at 9pm, said: “Continuing coordinated ground and air mop up activities by military personnel in the aftermath of diversionary terrorists attacks on Maiduguri and Konduga have led to the destruction of dozens of more terrorists.
“At least 53 more insurgents  lost their lives as troops in pursuit of the insurgents  engaged those that fled and their additional reinforcements in the outskirts of Konduga and Maiduguri in a battle Sunday night/early Monday morning.
“Health and emergency workers are having hectic challenges in evacuating terribly mangled corpses of the terrorists for mass burial.”
A tweet by the Defence Headquarters confirmed the fresh mileage gained by troops.
The DHQ tweeted: “More casualties inflicted on terrorists as troops battled fleeing ones and reinforcement at outskirts of Maiduguri, Konduga.
“Substantial amounts of heavy weapons have been captured, as more terrorists died in the fight which lasted till early Monday
“Our forces also recorded some casualty. Meanwhile, ground troops are in charge and Airforce patrol still ongoing.”
A military source however gave insights into why Boko Haram embarked on ore-emotive attacks on Monguno, Konduga and Maiduguri.
He also hinted of a likely sabotage of troops by some locals in the affected parts.
The source said: “The suicidal attempt on Maiduguri and Konduga might have been staged to divert troops’ attention from their goal of commencing the “once and for all” battle against the terrorists by members of the Multinational Joint Task Force from Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and Chad planned for early this week.
“There are fears that saboteurs among local sympathisers in one of the affected communities might have betrayed the troops, especially concerning the plans to annihilate terrorists to pave way for the success and peaceful conducts of forthcoming elections in every part of the country.”
Coordinated ground and air mop up activities by military personnel in the aftermath of diversionary terrorists attacks on Maiduguri and Konduga in Borno led to the destruction of dozens of more terrorists.
This information is contained in a statement issued by Defence Headquarters on Monday in Abuja.
The statement disclosed that substantial number of heavy weapons had been captured, in addition to the number of terrorists that died in the night fighting until Monday morning.
It added Nigerian forces also recorded some casualty “but troops and Air Force patrol are still ongoing.’’

Mba pained by Eagles’ AFCON miss

Nigeria 2013   Africa Cup of  Nations (AFCON) hero Sunday Mba has voiced his sentiments over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Mba scored twice at the 2013 AFCON, his second the winner as the Super Eagles overpowered Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final in Johannesburg to become African champions for the third time.
The CA Bastia midfielder said failure to make it to the AFCON just two years after emerging champions underlines “falling standards” in Nigerian football.
“I was actually shocked after we drew (our final qualifying) match against South Africa. It was a painful moment because it meant that we would not be going to Equatorial Guinea,” Mba told supersport.com.
Nigeria failed to reach the 2012 AFCON finals co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea but were crowned kings of the continent a year later and Mba sees a similar script playing out yet again.
The 26-year-old predicts that the Super Eagles will rise like a Phoenix from the ashes “if the rights steps are taken.”
“Standards have fallen and we have to go back to the basics of giving the home-based players a chance to shine.
“The national team coaches appear to be doing that from what I saw of our last two games against the Ivory Coast and Yemen. It is a very sad thing for the football world for an AFCON to be held without Nigeria but we must strive to bounce back from this,” he said.
Mba, once touted as the new golden boy of Nigerian football, has dropped out of reckoning in the past 12 months.
He was dropped from Nigeria’s final 23-man squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup by head coach Stephen Keshi, a decision which he said numbed him with shock.
“I was very, very sad (to be excluded) but I always believe that God has a reason for everything that happens in life. But as soon as the matches commenced, I did not waver in my support for the Super Eagles. We did well by reaching the second round where we lost to a very good France side,” he said.
Mba has scored five times in 21 senior appearances for Nigeria.

UN Declares Mali Ebola Free

The Malian government and the United Nations have declared the country free of Ebola after 42 days without any new cases of the deadly virus.
Mali recorded six deaths from Ebola, which, according to World Health Organization data, has killed more than 8,400 people in neighbouring Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia in the worst epidemic of the viral haemorrhagic fever on record.
"I declare on this day, Jan. 18, 2015, the end of the end of the Ebola epidemic in Mali," health minister Ousmane Koné said in a statement in which he thanked the country's health workers and international partners for their work to halt the outbreak.
Mali's last infected patient recovered and left hospital early last month. At one point health officials had been monitoring more than 300 contact cases.
Mali became the sixth West African country to record a case of Ebola when a two-year-old girl from Guinea died in October. It was close to being declared Ebola free in November before a second wave of infections.

Buhari: Jonathan’s govt has ruined economy

Nigeria is broke, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday.
“Many states could not pay their workers’ salary in December,” he said as he tongue lashed the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration for neglecting corruption and misgovernance  to focus on his health.
The rumour of his ill-health, he said, is a desperate attempt to take the mind of Nigerians off the basic issues of corruption and misgovernance by the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja, Gen. Buhari also said he had no problem with his certificates with which he contested elections under the guidelines provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on three occasions.
He argued that rather than address the problem facing the nation, which led to non-payment of workers’ salaries in December, the government was talking about the health of an individual.
Gen. Buhari said:  “Vanguard reported that I was to jet out for medical check-up yesterday (Saturday) but here I am. I was in Nasarawa and Benue states yesterday (Saturday); tomorrow, I am going to be in two states. The day after tomorrow in two more states. I am doing two states per day.
“How they got the impression that I was sick, I do not know. Although I got cold, that did not stop me from going on with my schedule.
“I don’t know of this desperation. The issue we are telling Nigerians is that of corruption in this country and that in the last 16 years, PDP has literally destroyed this country.
“This is the issue and I don’t understand what my health has got to do with that one. I have been sick on daily basis? And documents have been put on paper, on tweeter that I am sick and ABUTH has said they are forged documents. This desperation is beyond my understanding.”
Asked to make a categorical statement on his health, Gen. Buhari jokingly asked the reporter: “How old are you? 50 years? I am telling you that if we go to the field, you would not last the time I will last in the field.”
On the controversy surrounding his certificate, Gen. Buhari said: “Why didn’t Nigerians ask before? I have contested elections three times under the same rules set by INEC where there is a basic education qualification you must have. I was allowed to contest all these elections because my certificate? were in order.
“There were individuals that wrote to the United States War College and the college answered them and it was published by some of your papers. Really, this desperation of misinformation that is being passed around will do nobody any good because our minds are being taken away from the serious issues of corruption and incompetence by the PDP.”
The APC candidate spoke also on the alleged fraud in the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) where he was chairman during the Abacha regime, “That one has been cleared. There is no fraud in PTF,” Gen. Buhari said, adding:
“There was an investigation and General Obasanjo has answered that question. He confirmed that there was an investigation and the report was brought to him and there was nothing on ground as far as my management and chairmanship of the PTF was concerned. So, what else can I say when the person who did the investigation because he was the Head of State has cleared me. What else can I say?”
Lamenting the state of the economy, he said: “Well, the country is broke. Many states could not pay their workers’ salaries. Even in December most families were hungry during Christmas because government could not pay their salary and yet, they are talking about an individual’s health instead of paying the people.”
Also yesterday, the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of circulating a scam medical report on Gen. Buhari.
A statement from the Directorate of Media and Publicity of the organization, signed by Mallam Garba Shehu, said it was ludicrous for the PDP to throw caution to the wind in its “shameless” effort to pull wool over the eyes of Nigerians because of their rising desire for change of guards at the federal level.
The statement, which was given to The Nation in Abuja, directed the attention of Nigerians to the glaring errors on the letterhead of the paper on which the purported medical report was written, wrongly identify the institution as Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital instead of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), as the Zaria-based teaching hospital is known.
The statement reads: “The attention of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation has been brought to the circulation of a fake medical record of General Muhammadu Buhari.
“We are able to track the circulation of the post on a social media platform and we know that the information emanated from the Facebook handle of one of Governor Ayo Fayose’s aides.
“It is noteworthy that the authorities at the Ahmad Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) has given a clean bill on General Buhari’s health status. It is also noteworthy for Nigerians to understand that the PDP will stop at nothing to cast aspersion on the person of General Buhari.
“We knew that the PDP would become unbridled at a point in its desperation to avert the defeat coming its way in the countdown to the February 14 presidential election, but to anticipate that the PDP would go as dirty as spreading falsehood on an individual’s state of health could not have been imaginable.
“What is important is that Nigerians know today that our country is not healthy. They know that the PDP has driven the country to a near state of comatose. Our national security is very unhealthy and our national economy is right now gasping for breath from the stranglehold of the PDP.
“It is almost as if official corruption and impunity are matters of state policy in the management of our national economy under the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
“That is why a great number of Nigerians yearn for change. Nigerians want a change from the clueless and directionless management of our security and our economy. Nigerians made a call on General Buhari to come on this rescue mission. They called on him because they know he is as fit as a fiddle to fix our unhealthy economy and the insecurity that has consumed a large region of our land.”
In another statement, Shehu, said the seemingly “exhausted and frustrated” ruling PDP cannot hoodwink the public in its “sickening” attempt to tarnish the towering moral stature of its presidential candidate by dredging up a discredited report.
The statement said: “President Obasanjo, who set up this panel to probe Buhari’s tenure at PTF, discovered something shocking from the work of the panel”.
He recalled that after reviewing the PTF report, former President Obasanjo directed the relevant authority to go after those indicted by the report, giving Buhari a clean bill.
Shehu explained that it was common knowledge to Nigerians that the Interim Management Committee was sacked by former President Obasanjo in March 2000 for alleged incompetence, amidst charges of serious abuse of public trust. Several members of that committee were indicted and made to refund hundreds of millions of naira of public funds, which they illegally took from the PTF.
He said anyone under the illusion that it could use “a rotten report to smear Gen. Buhari must be living in fantasy”, adding that these “desperate tactics” would only amount to disservice to President Jonathan and his party, the PDP.
He advised the Jonathan administration to focus its energy and attention on how to help give the country a new lease of life in the face of grim prospects on the economic front instead of wasting time on the futile efforts to smear the APC candidate.
Shehu reiterated that the PDP administration lacked the credibility to throw stones at Gen. Buhari, who is “by all accounts more credible and trusted” in the eyes of Nigerians.

For the sake of selfies, Emma Nyra went a step further

(The singer is presently on vacation and she posted these
pictures wearing an orange swimsuit and sunglasses. Photo:
Emma Nyra/Instagram)
Emma Nyra has gone a step further to show she has got the
hot body too.
Quoted to have said flaunting her sexy body is part of her
selling point, the MMMG First Lady recently shared some
pictures on Instagram in her bikini wear.
The singer, who is presently on vacation, posted these
pictures, wearing an orange swimsuit and sunglasses, and
ermm…necklaces?
But the funny thing is she doesn’t seem to have any plan of
going to swim, so we guess the swimsuit shots are strictly for
the sake of selfies.
Whatever the case, Emma looks really good in her bikini.
What do you say?

GOH! Rihanna and Leonardo Dicaprio are expecting a baby! Yay!

Erm, calm down! The hilarious report is from MeditaTakeOut so read and laugh...hehe. See below..

MediaTakeOut.com told you guys that Leonardo DiCaprio was dating Rihanna . . . and that they rang in the new year together. Some of y'all ain't believe us. Well now we have controverted proof.
On Saturday night, there was a party at the Playboy mansion. One of the Playmates tweeted out that she saw Rihanna kissing Leo. She quickly deleted it and added that she was at the mansion with "unnamed celebs" after she realized that she might get in trouble for spilling tea.
Anyways, our SAME SNITCH that told us about Leo and Rihanna (before ANYONE ELSE KNEW) told us that Rihanna is DEFINITELY PREGNANT. And that despite her recent "partying" . . . Rihanna STILL PLANS on keeping the baby. We're STILL not clear yet on who the father is . . . but it now looks like it MIGHT BE LEONARDO DiCAPRIO!!
Wow . . . if Rih has Leo's baby - Blue and North West just got BUMPED INTO B-LIST BABIES!! This is a MediaTakeOut.com EXCLUSIVE!!!
Lol.  They've been saying Rihanna is pregnant for the last two months, but she's been drinking and partying a storm. Guess they will later say she lost the baby!! Lol

Jonathan begs Obasanjo

Desperately seeking former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s support for his re-election bid, President Goodluck Jonathan last night met with the ex-leader at his Hilltop mansion in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The meeting, which started at about 9pm, ended shortly before 10pm when those at the meeting drove out of the ex-president’s residence in a convoy of nine cars.
At the meeting, according to unconfirmed sources, were two major Christian leaders –  Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) General Overseer Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye and Winners Chapel’s Bishop David Oyedepo. Both church leaders could not be reached for comments last night.
It was learnt that the church leaders attended the meeting at Obasanjo’s  instance. He, according to sources, insisted when the President proposed the meeting that the religious leaders must witness the discussion.
The former president, it was gathered, said the president did not honour their previous agreements, hence the need for high profile witnesses.
Other leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including National Chairman Adamu Mu’azu and former  PDP chairman Senator Ahmadu Ali, were also believed to have attended the meeting.
The relationship between Jonathan and Obasanjo has been frosty.  Obasanjo has been a fierce critic of the Jonathan administration, knocking it for alleged corruption and slow response  to the Boko Haram challenge.
Attempts by Dr. Jonathan to woo the ex-President, who is his political godfather, included a meeting last month with Obasanjo by some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, led by Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio. In that team were Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke and Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu.
Although neither Jonathan, who passed the night in Abeokuta, to enable him continue his campaign in the Southwest today – in Osogbo and Ado Ekiti – and tomorrow in Akure – nor Chief Obasanjo, was available to speak to anxious reporters after the meeting, sources said Obasanjo planned to use the talk as an avenue to ask the president some salient questions, most of which he had publicly raised, before the religious leaders.
These included the security of the country, the weeding out of his loyalists from their positions in the PDP, the matter concerning the SouthWest organising and mobilisation committee of the party, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, who the former president said he could not accept as his leader, among others.
Addressing the rally in Abeokuta,  Jonathan who begged Ogun electorate to give him their mandate the second time, acknowledged the place of the state in the nation. Jonathan fought back, slamming elders who “talk like motor park touts”.
The President mentioned the late Chief MKO Abiola, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and former President Olusegun Obasanjo  – all from the state.
He also cited the late woman-activist, Madam Funmilayo Kuti, saying all of them were great leaders who worked for the uplift the nation and to the citizenry.
Jonathan said: “You gave us your support the last time; we are asking for support now. Your mandate given to us was not a failure. We have built railways that pass through Ogun.
“Our industrial policy has favoured Ogun and about  56 new industries have been opened here and you can imagine the number of jobs created through that.  This government is a business-friendly government.
“The agro- cargo airport which was pioneered by Gbenga Daniel when he was partnering the Federal Government, will be brought back to you and the   Olokola Free Trade Zone and others,  everything will be restored.”
The President scored his administration high, saying it tackled stealing and corruption from fertilisers procurement, established over a dozen universities and empowered women.
According to him, if elected, the Federal Government  would create two million jobs yearly to absorb the 1.8million Nigerians, who are being into the labour market yearly.

Three siblings, three others die in Lagos fire

Fire swept through some parts of Lagos between Sunday and yesterday, leaving no fewer than six persons dead.

Another person died when a building collapsed on Victoria Island, Lagos, yesterday.

Fire razed the popular Balogun Market on Lagos Island, a sawmill on Ebute Meta, Lagos Mainland and the Igando Dumpsite on the LASU-Iba Road.

Four children, a septuagenarian and a young man died in Sawmill fire, which started about 9.36pm on Sunday.

Among them were three siblings, Amidat, Quayub and Ahmed, aged between three and seven.

They were burnt to death in their shanty near the Sawmill.

Emergency workers said they recovered one body on the scene.

Sources said the siblings were last seen around 8pm, few minutes before they died in the fire which affected Jebba, Kano and Cole streets.

It was gathered that the septuagenarian was bed-ridden in a storey-building affected by the fire.

The fire was so intense that motorists plying the Third Mainland Bridge on Sunday night could feel the heat.

The Balogun Market fire, which started about 3am, destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

No fewer than five plazas, including a Diamond Bank branch on the street, were affected by the fire. The incident caused traffic gridlock in and out of Lagos Island early yesterday.

Most of the traders did not know their shops were on fire until they got to the market.

The fire affected Balogun, Gbajumo and Fred McWen streets, disrupting business activities.

Most of the attached shops including containers built on transformers were destroyed.

Although the fire service deployed its aerial fighter to the scene, the fire kept raging. Many attributed its intensity to the stored inside some shops.

A trader dared the raging fire climbing a building to recover his safe.

The trader, who was seen climbing the building from the Gbajumo axis, resurfaced with a huge safe. Many watched in awe as he took the risk.

Many women wept profusely as they could not recover anything from their shops and warehouses. Some men among them vented their anger on the local government for according to them, installing road blocks which fire trucks easy access.

A victim, Rafatu Adeyemo, who said she was training her children with proceeds from her shop, wept in front of her shop, which is inside Rich Plaza.

Felicia Lawani, who said two of her shops and her warehouse were razed, stated that her neighbour alerted her.

“I have two warehouses and a shop in the building. I sell shoes.  I did not hear about the fire on time. I cannot really talk to you now because I am confused. This is the second time that I will lose my goods to fire. The first one was that of UBA Plaza; I lost everything. Not even a pin was recovered. Now the same thing has happened again,” she lamented.

Mrs. Vera Ezenma, who just stocked her warehouse last week, cried uncontrollably as she was stopped from entering the fire.

She said: “I have two shops and my main warehouse here. My husband is in China and he sent the goods to me. I just offloaded my goods on Monday and Wednesday. I packed them in the main warehouse here. Look at me now; the whole goods are gone. I did not pick anything out of this place. I came here around past 5am. Someone called me on phone that my shop was burning. Where do I start? What do I do?”

Chukwudi Azubuike said: “People should come here and see things for themselves. The local government installed blockades on the roads. If they had not put these hindrances which do not allow vehicles to pass, the over five hours we spent trying to remove them would have been useful in saving our wares.

“Go and tell them that I will break my voter’s card. I cannot vote for anybody. This is the second time two of my shops would be burnt. The first one was at Tejuosho Market. Two of my shops got burnt and I did not get a single thing out. Now I have lost two of my shops again. This is too much and I cannot take it. What government enjoys the sufferings of its people? They enjoy scattering our business and our money. What do they want me to do? The entire road was blocked and the fire truck could not come in.”

More than four buildings were razed by the Igando Dumpsite fire.

The fire was said to have been caused by the inflammable materials dumped at the site, such as tyres.

The fire, which started at about 4pm on Sunday, raged till mid-day yesterday.

While inspecting the extent of damage at the Balogun Market, the Iyaloja General, Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, appealed to the traders to remain calm. She said stock would be taken after the fire had been put out.

She promised to appeal to Governor Babatunde Fashola to assist the affected traders, adding that the market would be re-planned without sentiments.

“We cannot give an account of the number of shops burnt or the extent of damage because fire-fighting operation is still going on. But I can tell you that many things have been destroyed here. About five storey buildings and many key clamps are affected. We will plead with the governor to see whatever assistance that can be rendered. It is not only markets that are burning. We are in the harmattan season and the tendency of fire outbreak is high.

“What our people need to do is to be careful. Like the case of the Ebute Meta Plank Market, people should not smoke around there since there is the likelihood of it causing inferno. We will also need to put sentiment aside and address the issue of re-planning this market (Balogun),” she said.

An engineer simply named Oluwatosin died in the Victoria Island building collapse. The same building at 249B Muri Okunola Street, collapsed last year, killing no fewer than 30 people.

When The Nation visited the scene, the body, which was retrieved from the debris, was covered with a white cloth awaiting evacuation.

It was gathered that the deceased had gone into the building to ascertain the state of the slabs. A man who gave his name as Pastor Reuben Adeyemo claimed the deceased is from Ondo State, but could not say where his family lives.

Sources said he was a civil engineer with a construction company that is in charge of the building which has been marked for demolition by the state building control agency.

Eyewitnesses claim the building fell around 11.30am, less than 30 minutes after they had exchanged pleasantries with the deceased.

There has been a movement on social media today as Nigerians and Africans joined their voices to raise awareness about the killing of 2000 civilians in Baga, Borno State.

Take a look at their words and messages below:

Illbliss: SAD…. May God punish the people masterminding all this mayhem and disaster .. May their families be burnt beyond recognition. MAY they wallow in pain and may the wrath of our LORD deal with them decisively….

Reekado Banks: Pls say a prayer for my motherland

Korede Bello: #GodBlessNigeria #GodBlessAfrica

Olamide: I pray for peace and blessings, ya Allah have mercy on the innocent souls

Toke Makinwa: Just when we are still reeling from the news of 2,000 people massacred in Baga, 2 female suicide bombers blow themselves up at the GSM market killing 4 people and injuring many others in Yobe state. I don’t recognise Nigeria anymore, this is not my country, these are not my people, when and how did we get here??? In Rivers state there is violence, APC building burnt down , on the other hand somewhere else a PDP bus is burnt too. The election process is not a do or die is it???? So why the violence? Of what difference does it make to terrorism Vandalism should never be accepted.people are hurt in the process. Who are these people??? Should the elections be postponed? Will February be safe? Why is there a March with world leaders and religious leaders in Paris and here NOTHING! Of what value is a human life in Nigeria? At this rate is there a future for our unborn kids in Nigeria? No light, Bad roads, Bad leaders, Killings everywhere, Corruption….. Father have mercy on us today

Yvonne Ekwere: We are all of the HUMAN RACE… We all laugh, cry, eat, sh#t, breathe,… we have so much in common as human beings why kill your kind in the name of religion. what sense does that make??? what has come over the world? since when did it become ok to take the lives of innocent people? why should journalists be killed for expressing themselves? why are young school girls taken hostage just because they went to school? how is it normal to strap bombs to a 10 year old girl child to kill herself and others? what did she/they do to diserve this???? if the practice of “religion” requires one to murder others is it really RELIGIOUS? What about CONSCIENCE? and COMPASSION??? i’m shocked, tired, angry and confused. i am a CITIZEN of this WORLD, it is my right to practice whatever religion i choosei, live the way i want and not be worried about losing my life because of my choices… WTF are you to oppose that? You are NOT GOD and by the way, i hear from Him myself, you cant shove you radical sentiments down my throat. all i ask is that we JUST STAY IN PEACE. #RIPtoEveryLifeLost #LOVEisMyRELIGION#StayInPeace #peace #Nigeria #France #Unity#BringBackOurGirls #BringBackOurCountry#CharlieHebdo #BridgeTheGap #WeAreTheWorld#CitizenOfTheWorld #enoughisenough#worldpeace #Unity #WeAllShouldTryToGetAlong#ItsNotThatDifficult#WeDontHaveToLikeEachotherButLetsBeCivil#OnlyLightCanFightDarkness #MBOK #Vixen#VonneVixen #pray

Peace Hyde: There is evidence EVERYDAY to prove that this world is unequal! 12 dead in Paris results in PRAYERS & PROTEST… Thousands dead in Nigeria results in SILENCE. It doesn’t matter where you live or your race or color… EVERY life MATTERS. Let’s show the next generation that when ONE person hurts…WE ALL HURT!… #PrayForNigeria #PrayForParis #PrayFortheWorld #Peace #humanity #love #respect#appreciate #life #photooftheday #oneworld #pray #God#Godhavemercyonus

Udoka Oyeka: Is there any solution for this issue facing Northern Nigeria?????? #2000dead #BokoHaramMustGo #ThisIsSickening#BringBackOurGirls
